LUMUNAUT STORY #69: NATURE & TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHER: STEFANO DI SANZA

For Stefano the world is a freeland; beyond an ambition as a photographer for National Geographic Nature Magazine and an intense love for travel, there is more than meets the eye.

WHERE DID YOU MEET PHOTOGRAPHY OR WHERE DID PHOTOGRAPHY MEET YOU?
Since I was very young at home I have never missed a camera and a video camera because my father has always had a passion for photography and so I'm growing up I followed in my father's footsteps and I grew this passion more and more to date in what is my job.
 
WHERE DO YOU THINK THE WISDOM AND INSTINCT FOR A GOOD PHOTOGRAPH COMES FROM?
I believe that the wisdom and instinct to make a good picture derive in large part from the passion that one has for what one is doing and from the experience that accumulates with the mistakes of the past.

WHAT ATTRACTS YOUR CREATIVITY TO THE WORK YOU SHOOT? 
I am attracted by the majesty of the landscapes that nature is able to give us.

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE A CAMERA IN YOUR HAND?
When I'm not in the studio or around the world taking pictures and I do not have my trusted Canon with me I cultivate other passions like that for music or cooking.

FIRST THING YOU WOULD DO IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY?
The first thing I would do is move from the city where I live to move to places that stimulate my creativity.

WHAT IS THE CRAZIEST THING YOU EVER DID AS A PHOTOGRAPHER?
The craziest thing I did as a photographer was going for hours in the middle of nowhere to photograph the stars, to take the shot took more than an hour and the outside temperature was below zero.

CAN YOU BRIEFLY DESCRIBE TO THE READERS YOUR PHOTOGRAPHIC WORKFLOW?
My workflow is very logical and linear, there is first the creative phase in which I think about what I want to achieve, then there is the research and design phase where I study the best way to get the result I have set myself and in end there is the shooting phase.

IF YOU COULD CARRY ONLY 4 PIECES OF EQUIPMENT TO A PARALLEL UNIVERSE (NO PHOTO EQUIPMENT ON THE OTHER SIDE) FOR A YEAR, WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE?
I would certainly wear a pair of sunglasses, a swimsuit, a towel and a pair of flip-flops with the hope that this parallel universe will be viewed from the sea.

HOW MUCH POST PROCESSING GOES INTO CREATING YOUR IMAGE ON THE AVERAGE AND HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT EDITING YOUR SHOTS?

Behind my shots there is not much post production, let's just say that I simply give my shots a tone that helps to understand the emotion that arouse in me. Regarding instead the process behind post production, I use lightroom that allows me to adjust everything I need.

YOUR TOP FOUR (4) CURRENT PHOTOGRAPHERS?
The four photographers I follow the most and which I mostly admire at the moment are definitely: Peter Mckinnon, Chris Haun, Matti Hapoja, Alen Palander.
