LUMU 101: SPOT METERING

WHAT IS… SPOT METERING?

Spot metering offers us the ability to measure the correct exposure on a certain fixed point. By measuring the light that is reflected off a chosen surface, it tells the aperture you need, to achieve the 18% (middle) gray level on your selected subject.

While spot metering is useful in a variety of scenarios, it’s most common use is when you’re shooting scenes with multiple light levels. For example, when your subject is in a deep shadow, or under a spotlight. Perhaps you are shooting the outside enviroment through a window, or your subject is backlit - the options are endless.

LESS IS MORE

But where spot metering really shines is macro photography. Measuring the correct exposure will slightly darken your background, highlighting your macro subject.
